Gold is a Symbol for More than Luxury and Success
The gold Oscar, the Olympic Gold medals, the gold star sticker in elementary school. Gold is not only a symbol of success, it is a symbol of hope.
Lupita Nyong’o’s acceptance speech for best supporting actress was as moving as her award winning performance in Twelve Years a Slave. She concluded her impassioned thanks with the words…”that for all children anywhere, the Oscar is a symbol that your dreams are valid.” Lupita’s parents are from Kenya and she was born in Mexico.
When an Oscar is awarded, children and grownups alike live in the moment of a dream being realized. We root for them and share the moment with them. Who doesn’t want to dream? When dreams die, what is there? (There is probably a famous quote to that effect.)
Lupita wore a very on trend pleated light blue dress by Prada which was luminous against her dewy black skin and so very fresh compared to the nude and beige jewel tone dresses worn by so many others. Her spare use of jeweled accessories was also inspired. Her skinny jeweled head band and diamond flared earrings along with gold bracelets and her self described family totem ring – a gold frog- added great detail and flourish to the ensemble. (We’ve commented before that our jewelry choices are totems, whether consciously or unconsciously chosen as such!)
Nothing beats an Oscar winning smile though. Lupita’s smile was electrifying. Bravo on all counts: she gave a gut wrenching movie performance (the movie was worth her performance alone – the scene where she is caught sneaking a piece of soap) and she emoted a certain humility that inspires us to hope and to revel in the success of others.
To top it all off Lupita has an original sense of style. Naturally, we were thrilled to see a young woman so thoroughly modern and classically dressed. We pulled some of our Rock of Eden earring favorites that we consider to be both modern and classic below. Enjoy and above all, keep dreaming!
